Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
